Turn signals on the "blink"

Turn signals on the "blink"

Thanks to all who helped earlier with my starting problem for my late 71 TR^. That is all set now and, thanks to my local British car repair shop, I now have new springs and shocks with the tube shock conversion kit for the back. Very nice but two questions:

The repair man used the Victoria British rear tube shock conversion kit and one of the tires is slightly slanted; i.e. the top of the tire is very slightly further away from the frame/body than the bottom. Is this a problem?

Second problem: For years the hazard warning lights have been balky but the turn signals worked. I would hear a slight "clunk" from the flasher relay when I turned the hazard flasher on and nothing would happen. Now, when I turn on the hazard flasher switch, they go on but will not turn off. If I disconnect the battery and re-connect it, there is a current pull (slight spark on the reattached pole), the relay "clunks" and the flashers go on--but not off. From another post, I understand that the turn signals will not work unless the hazard flashers work and I thought it might be the switch itself. I am hoping not, as I got pretty far taking off the necessary bits to pull the flasher switch but gave up when I could not pull the tach to get at the switch. Any thoughts? thanks

If they are different side-to-side, then I would want to get the rear end aligned. The camber should not be affected by the shocks, but it sounds as though your mechanic may not have reinstalled the suspension mounting brackets the way they were before. That may mean he also upset the toe-in adjustment.

If you pull off the Purple/Red wire, that should disable the relay and hazard flasher, which sounds like it should at least solve the current draw problem.

Depending on how the hazard switch has failed, you may then need to jumper the light green/brown wire around the hazard switch to get the turn signals working again.

Re: Turn signals on the "blink"

I just replaced my dash pad on my 76 TR6 about 3 weeks ago. I had to pulled the instrument panel to replace the pad. If you remove the heater hose going to the driver's side vent, you can get your hand up there to disconnect the cable to the speedometer gauge. You can disconnect the RPM cable by going up on the right side of the steering column. Its a tight fit, but unless you have a larger hand then most people you should be able to do it. I took the screws out that held the instrument panel and tilted it out. I didn't disconnect any wires. Its easy to get to everything once you have the panel tilted out. Its a lot of work, but there arn't too many options.

Thanks for the suggestion on the lopsided tire. As for the turn signals, I disconnected the purple/red wire at the flasher relay but that rendered the hazard flashers and the turn signals inoperative. Any thoughts?

Re: Turn signals on the "blink"

Yes--I figure if I need to get to the switch itself, I will have to tip the dash forward. According to the service manual, you can get to the switch by pulling the tach or speedo, but I don't see how you can remove the plastic bezel in front of the gauge. Hopefully I can figure some work-around, I can live without flashers but turn signals are kind of necessary especially with all the crazy SUV drivers where I live.
