T-Series Turn Signal Switch on a Mk 1

Offline
Recently picked up one of the early turn signal switches with the optional high beam 'flasher' built into the switch. Currently, the car has a worn original turn signal switch with the dimmer/high beam switch located on the firewall near the clutch pedal.

Couple questions:

1) Wires on the new switch match up perfectly with the old (including a black ground wire with bullet connector), except that the new switch has what I believe to be an additional ground wire, which ends in a metal circle clip- just like the grounding wire for the rear lights, etc. that bolts to the inner trunk body using the license plate bolt. Does anyone have a picture of the switch install (steve s.?) or could tell me where the second ground wire should fasten?

2) I assume that I can leave the floor dimmer switch in place without modification and that high beams can now be flashed from the floor switch AND the stalk, as appropriate. Anyone believe otherwise?

Thanks!

The original stalk switch "high" position is strictly momentary. You need the floor dimmer switch to go to high beams (or be willing to hold the stalk in the "pull" position). It was a "flasher" for signalling desire to pass when overtaking... or saying "Hello!" to oncoming fellow LBC drivers. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

If it retains the "high" position with a detent it would surprise me.

Thanks Doc. I agree the "high" position shouldn't stay on by itself.

Any ideas re: the extra loop grounding wire? Seems if I attach it under the mounting screw on the switch, that would be the easiest ground. The wire itself isn't really long enough for any other attachment point, but that one should be sufficient I would think.

I should actually have a chance to install this tonight.

Matt, I can't recall seeing another ground on the originals than the Lucar connection one, would imagine any convenient attachment point would do. The column on our "older" cars would have a good ground thru the "adjustment" clamping arrangement at the instrument panel so if you attach it on the mounting screw you should be "good-to-go".

...and I see yours is OEW, too! Our '64 ~was~ OEW originally, then Amana (or Tappan) white when we got it back in '89. I've "fixed" that. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Had a chance to take a look at this last night.

I was able to ground the extra loop wire on the screw holding the switch to the column. Works great.

Just FYI in case anyone ever searches for this topic in the future- the wiring diagram showing the 'flash-to-pass' optional switch is here: <https://www.bmcno.org/manuals/MGB Wiring Diagrams 62-80.pdf>. I just need to make up a couple of wires to extend the connections for the brown and blue/white wires from the switch loom and I should be good to go. Turn signals, turn signal cancellation and horn were all checked out OK after the install.

Excellent, now that you know just how that works any future questions will rely on your expertise. LOL

Nice job.
