Turn signal problem.

Hi Guys,

As I was stopped at a traffic light I noticed in a reflection of my car in a store window that it appeared the left rear turn signal was blinking. I checked the lever and it was in the center position so upon arriving at my destination I investigated it further and this is what I found.( the car is a 62 3000 bn7 non adjustable steering)

1 Signal in off postion resulted in a steady blink though not as strong as a normal blink and only on the left rear.

2.Lever in left turn position and I get a normal blink front and rear.

3 Lever in right turn postion I get normal right flash front and back and the left blinks in the rear at the same steady flash as the right side. The left front stays off.

4 parking lights all fuction normaly.

Any suggestions? It had been working fine for the past 18 months .

:yesnod: Sounds like you need to adjust the brake switch overiding relay. It's normally open but for some reason it's making slight contact. Lift the cover off the relay, (left Driver side front fender), check the number 3 terminal see fig. N20 on page N14 in the shop manual. Something is causing the flasher relay to operate on the left rear, short maybe?

No I had other problems as well, all of which prompted me to write an article on how to adjust the relay. Really wasn't that difficult, but the relay needs to be removed from the car to do properly. Most of the time if the relay didn't get wet the contacts should last a very long time, but they do need adjusting from time to time. Most people just buy a new one with solid state electronics inside.

I should have added in my post that I opened the turn signal relay box expecting to find the old style point contacts and it was already upgraded to the newer sealed in cube type relay system. Could that system be causing the same problem you discribed? If so is it possible to make any kind of repair to it? I was wondering if the problem could be in the trafficator switch in the steering wheel but I would think if that were the case the front light would flicker as well.
