What's the best way to turn the motor for checking the valves?

I just put it in 4th gear and roll it. I can get enough leverage by pushing on a front wheel. Just make sure you have enough clear space in the direction you decide to go. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
I pull the plugs, and use a wrench on the generator pulley nut. You may have to apply a little tension on the belt with your free hand, but it works for me.

Thanks--the 4th gear and roll method worked well, got the valves checked and adjusted (most were fine, just a couple were a bit off).
 
Change points, condencer, roter yet? Fifteen min job.
 
This is on my list. I set the point gap, and the points look pretty new. I'm planning on ordering new rotor, condenser, cap, points, and plugs and wires. Probably a new coil as well. After I set the points, the car wouldn't start. Turns out the big wire from the coil to the distributor was just jammed into the fitting, and not screwed in as it was supposed to be. Might as well replace it all while I'm in there, and keep the old bits for spares.
 
Isn't it intresting what folks will do. The DPO lives on.
 
That's the first bit of DPO magic I've run into so far, so not too bad.
