Tunnel swapping anyone?

Of my three MGB bodies (hey, if two are good then three must be great) the '64 is much more solid underneath. My transmission is '69 so requires the wider tunnel. My plan is to swap tunnels from the '69 onto to '64 as part of the floor panel replacement. Techmanuels say that the earler tunnerls must be "banged out" (nice technical term) for the tranny to fit.

Has anyone experience with this?

I haven't done this but when I restored my MGC GT I did use some bits of bulkhead from a MK1 MGB. The Tunnel in the MK1 is narrower and has a "hump" on top where the gear lever is. At the front on the right hand side there is a pressing like a tray that covers the starter motor.

All of this is replaced by the Mk 2 Tunnel so it would solve the gearbox clearance issues but the bulkhead is also different with the cutouts in the bottom corner of the firewall for the steering column being shallower and a simple part cone shape instead of the more complex shape of the Mk 2. Also if you have a later model Mk 2 (post 1972?), with Dash mounted vents there is no cut out or ducting in the bulkhead for these.

Hope this helps

regards

Tom
