Tudor washer pump- Bugeye

Are the threads on the original washer pump some previous standard. It is close to a 3/8 24 but the nut only threads on part way then jams.

I'm thinking of going over the stem with a die to force it into a 3/8-24 ! That may ruin it, I don't know. I don't know of an alternative.

BTW the repro washer pump knob I got from Victoria British doesn't have the right thread either. It does fit the repro pump but not an original.

Hi Fred,
Are you trying to reuse the original pump or is it that the repro pump won't thread?

If you feel you don't have any choice but to rethread it, maybe you could put something like Locktite thread restorer in the existing threads before you run that die over it. Might make it less likely to cross thread that way. That stuff is expensive, but I have a few parts where I might like to try it for this kind of application. Someone wiser than me will tell us if that will work. Never used it.

By the way, does your repro pump flop all over the place or is the shaft fairly tight? I bought one someplace, maybe on eBay, and it is a real piece o crap.

Charlie,

I bought a repro knob and pump and I agree it is floppy in the shaft, an unfortunate condition to have.

I couldn't use it because I also didn't have the mounting "cups" for the dash that are not reproduced.

Then I bought a used original pump from another forum member. Much better quality that's for sure. Cleaned up real nice. The shaft and tubing "nipples" are brass and it is more solid feeling.

Unfortunately the original pump came with the mounting cups but no nuts. Seemed simple to get some at the hardware store, but that's where I ran into the problem of the threads. Then I check my repro knob and found that it doesn't have the correct thread for the original pump though it does fit the repro pump.

Since I now have the mounting cups, I can mount the repro pump and knob. However, I'd rather mount the original Tudor pump. To do this I'll either need to find out what the thread is and get a link to a supplier of nuts for the old thread (if such exists). Alternatively, I could try to re-cut the threads, but this seems likely to strip them.

I've never heard of the loctite thread restore product. I'll research it, thanks!

May be a BSF thread which is one or two threads per inch different than what you'd get at the hardware store. I'd think carefully about running a die over it, the top is where it would match as a guide and the further down the threads the futher off it would be so that the threads at the bottom may effectively be gone. Result would be that it might strip or fail to tighten down due to insufficient "meat" left.

MikeP:
I agree about the die issue.

Anyone know a source for BSF threaded nuts, or know for sure what the threads are?

Fred

Thanks Nelson,
I sent 'em an email to see if they could help.

Fred

darn, I guess I sold you mine too cheap

Hey Edd,
Don't know if it was cheap yet or not, depends on how much the correct nuts will be!

I still don't know what threads they have. Jon at British fasteners sent this:

"With 3/8" British threads, the following choices were used (not necessarily
on Austin Healey's though)
BSW 3/8"-16
BSW 3/8"-20
UNF 3/8"-24 (American)
Bscycle 3/8"-26
I have each of them in stock but am unsure as to which was the correct
thread.
Let me know what you think.

If anyone has a clue, post it
