Trying to find a couple of metric wrenches

Hello everyone,

My Royal Enfield's front brake is in need of some attention, so I took the front wheel off and dug through all my wrenches to find one that would remove the nut that kept the brake closed. I didn't have one. So, I checked the sizes with a vernier caliper. One side of the wheel is 29mm, and the other is 30 or 31mm. Neither side corresponded with a standard equivalent.

Finding these wrenches must be tough. Sears didn't have them, nor did Harbor Freight.

Any ideas on where to look next? I'm thinking about canvassing the town to find the Snap-On van.

Thank you,
-Bill

Can you use a socket or must it be a wrench? Harbor freight sells a 3/4in drive metric set for about $40 or so. Not the best quality, but Ok for occasional use.

It would have to be a very deep socket to fit over the axle. I saw that set when I visited the store yesterday, but wasn't sure the socket would fit over the axle. There's also the problem that the nut on the opposite side must be kept still or else it will turn, making removal of the brake nut difficult at best. It's on there kind of tight.

Thank you,
-Bill

I have these sizes in low torque models. One is a Snap On tool and the others are bicycle tools made by Park Tool Co. You can also buy hub nut sockets in this size in most auto parts stores.

Look at McMaster-Carr they have every wrench you can imagine (and just about every other industrial supply you can think up!)

go to page 2700
But they don't list 19mm

If it is an older bike, I would guess that you have a Whitworth bolts and that the correct size is 5/8.
Note that the 5/8 is the length of the flat, not the distance between flats.

The truck tool guys usually have dealer searches on their website and toll-free numbers to call to find local dealers.

Once you get hold of a local guy it’s usually easy to pick a convenient place to rendezvous. (I usually catch my Snap-On guy while he hits the tire shop next to my favorite lunch hangout.)

Snap-On – use their dealer finder
MATCO – 866-BUY-TOOL (866-289-8665)
MAC – 1-800-MacTools
Cornwell Tools - (800) 321-8356

It's my 2003 Royal Enfield. They're only supposed to have a couple of Whitworth fasteners on the engine, and the rest is supposed to be metric. We all know how that can work, though. I posted to a yahoo group on the bikes, and got back two different responses. One was metric, and the other was standard and much bigger than mine. I'll go out and measure the flats. Couldn't hurt anyway.

Thank you,
-Bill

On a new bike metric does make sense.
Look at page 2705 McMaster has individual "premium" metric wrenches in 19mm and 30mm sizes for 19 you can even choose what finish type you want! (polished or satin) anything I have ordered from them has been very good quality. Very good service also.

Maybe RS Supplies (in the UK)? They list 30 x 32 mm Spanner (AKA wrench)- both in open-ended and ring for around ÂŁ10-ÂŁ12.

They do not list a 29 mm, so I'm wondering if your measurements might be 30-32 rather than 29-30/31?

I just figured out that I was using the caliper incorrectly. The true measurement on one side was close to 7/8", and my 15/16" was a perfect fit for that one. The other side measures exactly 1", which is an easy-to-find size. My apologies for the inconvenience /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif
