TRW Clutch Master?

Does TRW really make a clutch master cylinder for the TR6? I see a TRW master advertised on eBay and my left Bostonian tassel would appreciate a fix.

Vettedog,

Yes they do. TRW acquired the Lucas brand and is once again supplying hydraulics. I have a new TRW clutch master in my basement as a spare. They do look a little different from the originals (TRW branding, modern plastic cap), but even though I try to keep original, I will gladly trade some looks for quality over some of the questionable repro's out there.

TRW is basically considered OEM. The Girling hydraulics are hard to find but TRW is just as good. As said, the looks might be a little different but TRW is the best you can buy - maybe even better than the OEM Girling ones.

TRW is the only liscensed Girling replacment part producer at this time from what I understand (not that this stops cheap knockoffs from being made). I talked with Ted at TSI about brake masters and he essentially said that a rebuilt / resleved girling and a new TRW are going to cost about the same and that the quality of the TRW ones are just as good as the original Girling ones. For a long time there have been a lot of real poor quality brake cylinders out there for TR6s, and I assume the same for clutch hydraulics as well, but when it's a safety feature in particular, it's not worth saving some money when a potential failure could cost you so much more or even your life.

I happen to have a new old stock in lucas box girling clutch master cylinder that I plan on using when I put my car back together, but I'll probably get myself a new TRW brake master cylinder.

ISTR hearing that Wilwood makes a clutch master that fits, in a variety of bore sizes.

TRW (like Girling and Lucas) has been broken up and sold so many times now that I wouldn't place much faith in any of those names.

It appears my TRW clutch master is a "COUNTY" product repackaged in a nice TRW box? There are add on labels, one that states "COUNTY", that have the lower portion of the sticker carefully removed with a knife/razor (I guess that is where it would have stated made in India?). On the other hand the cylinder looks pretty good; better than the original because the exterior is coated with what appears to be a nice powder coated finish and the rod was plated well. I know the inside cylinder smoothness and the soft materials are the real key; all that remands to be seen.

County is a repackager, they don't manufacture anything on their own. So it's at least marginally possible they did buy your MC from TRW (or more likely IMO, both of them buy from the same source).

I was pricing clutch masters last weekend. The TRW versions were running $152. The generics were about $50. I am wondering if the Wilwood masters are any good. Anybody have any experience with them?

Any of you using DOT5 fluid the TRW box says it will void the warrantee.
Considering that their warranty is limited to replacing defective product (and not the paint job it ruined), I'm willing to take that chance.
