Trunnion bearing

I'm rebuilding my front end on my bugeye, and found that there is too much play in my spindle assembly. It seems that the easiest way to fix this would be to find new brass bearings in the trunnion. Victoria Brisith doesn't sell them independently, and I doubt Moss would either. Anyone know where I can buy those bushings? If I get new ones, then I can jush shave them down the the width I need.

You could push them in but do you have the two step reamer to set them? There is a Moss spindle set listed and you will need it all I should expect.

Best deal is to send to someone like Peter C or Hap and have them done.
 
I bet you money that the play is caused by a worn out fulcrum pin.
 
The spindles look good, so I don't want to spend the hundreds of dollars on a new spindle set. I was hoping just to get the bearing replaced. Who are Peter C and Hap?

I'll look tonight but I should have extra bushings laying around. You are saying that the up / down play is too great not the side to side right? The bronze trunnion bushings (17) don't get shaved, there is a second shim (18) that goes on the narrow part of the kingpin that sets the up / down play. The relevant section in the manual can be viewed here.

I read some of your blog. Very impressive!

The play you describe is up and down, but it is not adjusted with the bronze thrustwasher, it is adjusted with the little shims that sit on the shoulder of the kingpin. Number 18 as Chris shows. More shims, more play. Fewer shims, and the trunion is "allowed" to go farther down the kingpin and thus closer to the swivel axle and hence tighter. It can be counter-intuitive as we usually consider adding shims to make things tighter, when it is the opposite in this application. You typically get a small selection of shims with a suspension kit. If you need some, I carry them. They are called lengthening shims in the machine world, and are generally sold in packs of 50 each. I sell them singly.
