Trunk Lid Adjustment - Anything I should know??

My trunk lid is high on the driver's side. Since I won't be able to climb in the trunk and loosen the hardware and have someone on the outside move the trunk lid while I tighten the hardware I need another approach. Any suggestions or procedures for adjusting the trunk lid? Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Our 2004 Miata had a release on the inside of the trunk just incase you locked yourself in! Looked like it had a glow in the dark handle on it as well. The trunk was tiny...

If you didn't mark the hinges, then it's a 2 person job. Just did my bonnet with a buddy even though it was marked, no thanks to Issac Newton and his gravity laws.
I did try a piece of 2x4 cut in length with washclothes on the ends, but the bonnet was too heavy, not sure about a trunk though, shims?
