Trunk Hinge Question

How do you remove the pins from the trunk hinges? I am installing a works type luggage rack and need to replace the hinge pins in order to install the rack.

Ray

If their like door pins they usually only come out one way, have a look at the ends, one may be more bullet shaped than the other

ray7smith, you drive them out with an appropriate size drift, with a smart rap, you may find that one end has a very small projection/very tiny nipple, drive them out from the other end, might be a good idea to lube them up first.

I hope you don't have hinges like mine. The outboard end of the pin goes into a blind hole. Never made to be taken apart.

dave, i put 5-6 luggage racks on healeys all the same proceedure, knocked them out from the inboard side, im holding one in my hand right now, cant find the battery charger for my camera or id show it to you, hope i didnt brake nothin!, do your pins have a very, very small projection on the outboard end? small pin end/teet? that would not permit one to place a drift or punch onto? :savewave:

I think on the reproduction hinges (at least some), the pin does not go all the way thru.

lil dab of black soon fixen that
perhaps, but how are you going to install the rack? less you drill all the way through the hinge and make up a set of "pins"/threaded rod/nut washers and bolt? might be less expensive and time consuming to purchase the correct hinge set, i see them all the time on ebay. :savewave:

I don't plan to put a "rack" on it. Two seaters have a lot of trunk space. The spare tire goes in place of the rear seat space on a four seater. See pic.

Besides, the "rack" causes a lot of air drag at the speeds I normally run.

Sorry Dave, but my <span style="font-family: 'Script MT Bold'"> <span style="color: #990000">"Hortense" </span> </span> is WAY faster than your car ever even thought about being, <span style="color: #336666"><span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic"><span style="text-decoration: underline">INCLUDING</span></span></span></span> the very LAST "Factory" rack straight from the showroom wall!!!
Took an extra couple weeks for them to "find" the hardware kit!!

Gents, I CAN provide CORRECT hinges. They may be seen on my site in <span style="color: #CC0000"><span style="font-weight: bold">"House of Horrors"</span> </span> !!! IIRC, 8th or 9th down on right side.

Tell you what -- I'll swap my hinges for yours! My BJ8 has a luggage rack installed by the prior owner (he did a very professional job, I might add). I plan on removing it. I'd be more than happy to send you my hinges in exchange for yours! Send me a PM if interested!

I think I'll pass, but thanks anyway. BTW, how can you possibly get by without a luggage rack? I thought everybody needed one.
D
