The funny part is when you see one in "new" conditions at a show and people say WOW!

Ugly cars. I had a High School Girlfriend that had one of these too. Not exactly a step up but she ended up trading it in for an AMC Pacer. Like the Pinto, yet another fine specimen of Detroit’s’ early attempts to counter the Japanese invasion of fuel-efficient sub-compact cars.

Side note: My girlfriends’ Dad didn’t trust my 67 Firebird & me. So he almost always insisted that she drive whenever we went out on a date. Funny thing is, she ran out of gas far more than I ever did.

Yeah, but wasn't there a kick butt V8 Pacer?

Don’t know? Seems logical that some gearhead on a mission might have tried to do that. But I don’t think the factory ever did anything exotic to the rolling fish bowl.

My dad sold a 65 mustang with a 289 and a 4 speed when I got my license and bought a pinto

yeah there was one with a 304cid V8 and 4bbl

At one time, my parents owned both a Pacer AND a Gremlin. Having survived that, I can assure you that there's no such thing as a kick-ass pacer OR gremlin, no matter how fast some nut got them to go.

Ahhh, the 70s. The hungover decade.

On a side note, the Pacer was supposed to get a rotary, but AMC couldn't make it happen.

Actually it was supposed to be sourced from GM (from Vega) but GM dropped it leaving AMC hanging.

That's why I said AMC couldn't make it happen. GM pulled out of their rotary plans, and AMC had pretty much zero resources. I coulda been clearer, though.

I did once run across a chopped Gremlin. Guy had lowered the seats and took the headrest portion off to get it as low as he wanted. My question was,, why???

GM pulled out because NSU and Mazda had exclusive rights to the patents at the time and a deal could not be worked out.
