Trunk Carpet kits

I am making a MOSS order and notice they offer two MGB Carpet trunk kits, one says "fitted carpet set w/ spare tire cover"($133.95) and the other is a "molded trunk carpet set"($209.95)...Whats the difference?? I figure I'll treat the 78's to something for Christmas since they've been neglected all year. Also does anyone know if these kits cover the rear trunk panel(where the latch mounts)....If anyone has pics of their kit - lets see `em!

This is a MOLDED kit. It fits in the groves in the floor and has molded wheel well covers. Got it from Moss. It was easy to install. My spare tire cover, which is black, was extra. PJ

Makes me wish I had a trunk.

That is sooooo beautiful. I'm ashamed of how mine looks. Great car. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif

omg!!!, mine is all primer!!! lol thats looks gorgous!!! but heres what may come across as a stupid question, in the bottom picture there is a hat looking thing with hoses on it, its in my trunk too, but not hooked to anything, im guessing i should reinstall it, what does it do and how does it hook up?
thanks
Darren

Darren, that's a fuel vapor tank. One line goes to a fitting on top of the fuel tank and the other hooks up to a fitting on the trunk floor, which in turn goes to the carbon canester in the engine bay. Look at the photos I posted in the thread 72 engine bay photos. The line hooks up to the inverted "U" shaped hose on top of the black canister on the passenger side. PJ

Thats a beautiful trunk Paul, but did the moulded kit not come with a spare tire cover? Because the cheaper unmoulded kit does. I think I may go with the unmoulded because I am going to end up trimming it the way I want it to fit anyway.

This kit needed no trimming other than the holes for the gas tank filler pipe and the holes for the fuel vent tank lines. The problem with the non molded carpets is they are a bugger to shape around all the curves and bumps in the trunk. I looked at a couple of trunks done that way and they weren't very nice looking. The wheel wells were all cut up to make fit. I thought it was worth the extra money for the molded kit and I'm very glad I did. The tire cover was extra. Poor photo. Wrong setting. PJ

I can vouch for the poor fit of the non-molded carpet. That's what was in my car when I got it, and it looks like a rumpled after-thought. The only thing I plan on keeping from it is the nifty shag carpet tire cover.

Thanks for the great pics, PJ. If I can find and eliminate all the leaks I'll probably go this way. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm too cheap to fork out for the carpet kits, so I thought I would cut my own. How hard can it be? I bought a roll of black pile carpet, which will arrive soon, for this purpose.

Does there exist a template diagram somewhere with dimensions of all the pieces?

I thought about cutting my own too...Hence the reason I figure I'll be able to trim the nonmoulded to fit nicely. I've cut my own interior carpet kits a few times and they always turn out perfect. When I ordered an expensive kit from heritage upholstery I ended up retrimming the entire thing to get it right anyway. Looking at the moulded kit I can see a few areas I'd be trimming and fussing(I am an extreme perfectionist when it coems to this stuff)Whats the backing like on the moulded kit?

Slightly stiff. PJ

Do you hem the edges after cutting? I worry abiut fraying. But hemming them would be a pain.

Regular carpet shops will hem the bits for you.
I've asked before but forget what they want for it, can't be too much because I don't remember recoiling in shock...

My wife hems most big visible bits for me, but there is only a few of those...Other than that you should be ok without hemming.

For those hidden spots you could always use a bit of hot glue.
