Thanks for the offer Marv... I think I'll go with the brass- hopefully it will stand up better, but time will tell!

Elliot, careful on the attachment of the new brass one. IIRC , they can fall off in the tank

I was thinking if I used one on my 8 (assuming the size is right, and that there is a problem with the float, I don't have it out yet), I would solder the rod to the float. But I don't know if the heat would overpressure the float?

Now you guys have me worried... I guess if I test fit it and it feels loose I will try and bend the wire a little smaller and force the brass one into it. Any other ideas?

Wonder if I can use fine wire to hold it in place?

Update....
Received the brass float today. It looks like it will fit perfectly. Just for jolly's, I submerged it into a container of water to make sure no bubbles came out.
Will get it installed tomorrow.

I ordered one myself as I have the same problem...sunken plastic float.

The brass one fits tight in the wire loop which is a good thing!
Hopefully I will get it installed later today....

I can also confirm that that brass float works well in a TR8 sender. The diameter of the stock plastic float is about 1 inch, the brass float is about 1-1/4". I also put on a bit of solder to make double-sure, and plan to coat it with the extra tank sealer.

Use solder Elliot and be sure, just like Darrell.

BTW, here is what I did. I cleaned the wire on the sender as best I could, it was hard because it was quite pitted. Then using lots of flux, I tinned the wire. Then I snapped it around the float, applied more flux, and wrapped the rest of the float in a wet rag to keep from heating it up too much. Probably not needed, but just to be safe. Then I applied the iron to the wire, making sure that got hot first. Not the most beautiful solder job, but it should do the trick.

Paul- yes, I'm definitely going to use solder. It can only help.

Darrell- Thanks for posting the pics they are very helpful.
And since no-one sees it, you did do a beautiful soldering job!

And try not to get it too hot.....
You have that right Paul... it was close to 60 degrees here today- I love it!
OK, sender is soldered, back in and WORKING. Just came back from a little ride....aaaah!
I sure hope all the New Englanders are enjoying the nice balmy weather as well.

I think that it starts getting cold again tomorrow, but the warm air ride so far has been grand. December 22 and no snow on the ground makes me very happy.
