Trivia - what is it? Ans: Disney America c.1993

Re: Trivia - what is it?

Nah - nobody's even close, except for identifying parts of it (maybe).

It's a display of Disney's latest theme park, and the only US-based one (I think) not in central Florida or California. It was to be an American-history themed park located in northern Virginia on I66 roughly 35 miles west of DC. The model display in the picture was unveiled at a public meeting where Disney 'officially' announced their intentions.

The company bought up land in parts using a variety of buyers not directly associated with Disney (just like they did in Florida). At some point the secret got out and it became a huge issue. The town where it was to be located was a very quiet area. Although there were quite a few people in love with the idea of a Disney theme park, the opposition was massive - and the project slowly fell apart and faded away.

Just a little bit of history I'd forgotten about until I found that snapshot

Re: Trivia - what is it?

Re: Trivia - what is it?

...still looks like Ft. Monroe to me...

Re: Trivia - what is it?

'So, what's that supposed to mean????'

No sign of a "SEE ROCK CITY' sign. Burma Shave either.

Re: Trivia - what is it?

That looks so much like the old Universal movie lot in Hollywood...I can see the town square there 'Back to the Futuer' was made, across the pond there's the place where Moses parted the water and the quonset hut type buildings look exactly like the sound stages

Re: Trivia - what is it?

Wasn't Disney planning a venue of type this near Gettysburg at one time?

The geographic clues you gave may not match with this answer, though.

My wife's uncle was an old retired prop man for the studios for 40 years. Before the days of computer-generated images. He was responsible for Moses parting the waters. He did it all with a large pond of Jello. No kidding!

Re: Trivia - what is it?

Anybody remember Freedom Land? A Disney failure at a theme park on the outskirts of NYC. I was there as a kid back in the 60's and saw Chubby Checker who was entertaining there.
Wonder how many people remember it?

It was in the Bronx, and wasn't a Disney creation - but the guy that did it had been a Disney designer that was fired several years before the building of Freedomland.

At least parts of a few of the rides still exist in different parks though.
