The Triumph Trans-AmeriCan Charity Drive 2009 will wind its way across the U.S. and Canada between July 4 and September 29, 2009.
They have their route, and now they have the money for a car. The organizers of the Triumph Trans-AmeriCan Charity Drive 2009, a trans-continental drive intended to raise at least $100,000 for each of three charities in the U.S., Great Britain and Canada, put out the word last fall that they were looking for a solid Triumph Stag that could be restored with volunteer labor and donations. When a promising car came up for sale in Georgia, word spread quickly through a Triumph e-mail list, resulting in more than $5,000 pledged toward its purchase and restoration within 24 hours. “You people are fantastic!” said John Macartney, a historian and well-known Triumph enthusiast who is a main organizer of the drive. Macartney said the Georgia car and another located in Chicago are under consideration.
Macartney has also sketched out the Charity Drive’s route, which will begin somewhere in Florida on July 4, 2009, and end in San Luis Obispo, California, on September 29, 2009, to coincide with two major events, Triumphest and the Vintage Triumph Register North American Triumph Challenge. Clubs and individuals will have the opportunity to join the drive in progress. To see where the route will come nearest to you, check out the map at the event’s Web site.
Finally, Macartney reports that an anonymous donor in England has donated a UK-spec Spitfire to The Macartney Charitable Trust, the organization he founded for the event. Both the Spitfire, which was voted Car of the Show at the 1996 Triumph Sports Six Club (TSSC) National, and the Stag will be raffled off at the end of the drive. Glenn Merrell, Chairman of the Triumph Stag Club USA, is working with Macartney to organize the event, which will benefit non-profit organizations dedicated to treating people with post-traumatic stress disorder.
