Wedge Triumph TR8 Vibration Damper

Hey Folks,

I'm wondering if y'all can help me. I'm looking at the diagram in my
TR8, manual for the Crankshaft Vibration Damper. In the diagram there
are two versions, one which shows three pulleys and the other that
shows 2 pulleys (I presume the difference is AC vs Non-AC cars).
There's also a funny plate (602587). The final part is labelled with a
designation of NSS.

I've double checked against a VB catalog I have here on hand, and the
only part they sell is 602587 which they describe as a reinforcing
plate. Is this the rubber sandwich plate that needs to be replaced? or
is the harmonic damper the oddly shaped item designated NSS?

I've finally got my alternator pulley and water pump lined up
correctly, but the pump is still squealing, so my thought (which was
followed on by a separate recommendation) was to look into replacing
the harmonic dampener.

Thanks in advance! I'm trying to get all this sorted before Triumphfest!

Did you replace the damper or get it rebuilt?

Don,

Thanks! That's what I thought, but the *%(^(# TR8 manual and parts catalog was completely useless in that regard. That is, unless I somehow missed the instructions on how to use the little Orphan Annie decoder ring correctly.

You think these guys might stock one of these? How fast was their turnaround?

dang, that's not going to work. I need to get this stupid pile of iron running in 16 days....

Looks like I'll be calling the usual suspects first thing in the AM.

Well, it's the last culprit in the system.

I finally got everything else lining up correctly, but my timing seems to be shifting and I can see a wobble in the two end pulleys on the crank shaft.

They are in Ca.
Call them. Their web site sucks

You sure it's not the dizzy causing the timing flux?

Power steering pump pulley is nice and stable. There's a brand new PS pump on the car. The crank pulleys, however, appear to have more play in them than yours does.

Now that I look at that.
That was right after I got it.
I had removed the A/C and was hearing funning sounds that's when I saw the bad wobble on the PS and removed it.
The last 2 times I have put the motor together I put the alt pulley next to the dampener.
According to that vid it is suppose to be out more. After the AC pulley.
I guess I have not been lining them up.
I wonder what stress I have been putting on the water pump

Tomorrow I am sure Todd will chime in.
He's a heck of a lot smarter than I am .

It's not uncommon to see wobble in the crank pulleys. They get bent up fairly easy. Use a run out dial indicator and straighten them out if you can. Make sure your balancer is TR8 and not one from an old Buick 215. The TR8 ones are zero balanced and are interchangeable. The old Buick engines were externally balanced and those balancers don't play well with engines they didn't come from. Recently pulled apart a friends 4.0 that had a Buick balancer. Bearings were shot after 5K miles. Any play in the timing is mostly surely associated with either the distributor or more likely the distributor drive gear. Pull the distributor and check out the gear on the end for wear that looks like knife edge machining. Then look down the hole in the front cover with a flashlight and check out the gear on the end of the cam. The gear on the cam is the softer sacrificial metal. That is the one that is most likely damaged. Had that problem many times on the race car. It would show itself first as misfires at higher RPMs. If your stuck for a balancer and pulleys, I can lend you one, but I probably won't sell them outright. They are made from unobtanium. Send me a PM if you want me to drop one in the mail for you.

Thanks for the tips Todd.

This car is going in to the local brit car shop. I have neither the patience nor the desire to work on it right now. With all the hassle this car has given me I am very tempted to give it away.

Some cars just have bad mojo.

That's because it came fuel "infected" from the factory. Us four barrel guys never have these issues. We turn the key and go.
