Triumph TR MPG [Fuel Economy]

I sometimes like to track fuel economy (MPG) as an indicator of engine performance and health. I just started keeping track this summer and my TR4A is returning ave. 21mpg. Does anyone know what range I should be looking for or expect?

Car is bone stock and I generally drive two lane back country roads at 40-60 mph.

That's about what I get too but I know I'm running too rich. Ideally I think it should be closer to 23-24 for mixed highway/suburban driving.
 
It has been a long time since I had a TR4, but I do remember in 1967, I could easily drive from Vallejo to Bakersfield California, a distance of around 260 miles, on a tank of gas, driving at highway speeds. As I recall, my rule of thumb was 300 highway miles on a tank of high test leaded gasoline. I was running over sized SP190 Dunlap radials at the time.

The ethanol blends, now on the market contain less energy per gallon then a gallon of the 1967 gasolines, so your MPG will be less then back in the day. Accounting for the differences in fuel, Aaron is right on.
 
I had a TR4a IRS that got about 25-26mpg avg when I lived in Indianapolis, but it's pretty flat out there, and even around town I got on I-465 quite a bit. On trips to Brown County, IN, and Bloomington, the roads were still 2 lanes each way, but hillier, and I got about 24mpg. On a few trips back to NY to visit family, I got about 28-29mpg but it was all interstate. I had no o/d, but NY was still 55mph though the rest of the way was 65. My 1980 TR7 convertible with a 5 speed got about 31 on the same long trip several times. I tend to make it part of a roadtrip challenge to play the mileage game. This May I went from Austin, TX to Birmingham, AL with our 2005 Honda Civic 4dr sedan with a 5 speed. Got 39.9887mpg on the first tank, which was mostly 2 lane roads up to I-20. I also set rev limits, etc, to see what difference that makes.
 
Thanks, very useful info. The car does have O/D but I rarely use it on backroads. Really only if I am up on the parkway or turnpike cruising at 60+mph

I think I'll continue to "sample" a few more tank-fulls to set a baseline. Then go from there. Then, down the road, I can monitor it for changes which may signal an "issue".

Hi Bob,

I was routinely getting 25-30 on my 66 with OD before I switched to the EFI setup. I have not checked since the conversion, and actually still need to do some tuning, but I am quite pleased with the performance and reliability of the Megasquirt setup so far. It feels pretty odd to turn the key off and the engine actually stops.

Aloha Bob,

My TR3A (2L engine) with a non overdrive gearbox gets about 23-24 MPG using E10 fuel and a combination of city and highway driving on my daily commute.
