BBC News

Cowley, Oxfordshire, UK

Richard Branson today announced that his group of companies has purchased the
name Triumph back from German car firm BMW for 1# Sterling and plans to
reintroduce the brand globally in 2006.

'This needs to happen' stated Branson 'The Triumph name is synonymous with the
small, fun car and with petrol prices in the US at phenomenal levels the SUV is
soon to be dead'

Branson's team has stated the first 2 cars off the line will be copies of the
TR-4A and the TR-8. 'These were 2 of the most fun cars ever made' with modern
engine control, and new manufacturing technologies this will not only provide
jobs to this region, it will provide the opportunity for a new generation to
experience the LBC" (little British car, .ed) said Branson.

The plant location is still under wraps as is the final design of the car.
William Maykit Chief Engineer of the project states Oh, youll know it's a
Triumph, not that we'll say exactly what the product will look like. But we've
still got the original tooling and with the increased choice for engine types
and outputs we're looking at the TR-8 to be a serious performer.'

I'd love to see this happen, but I doubt even Richard Branson can get a car into production in that amount of time, or that he even thinks he can!
Is it April 1st. yet?
Simon.

Sorry to all - a member of my TR8 list was having some fun. Re-reading this I saw the chief engineer's nam (Willie Maykit) and decided to check the story. Should have known, it being the first of April and all. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

My apologies all around.

Too bad ain't it thought, a TR8 with better brakes, a five liter V8 and a good fuel management system - it would fly.

You know, there is a company in Dallas making "new" '67 Shelby GT500 Mustangs, all because of a movie ("Gone in 60 Seconds"). What about "remanufacturing" derelict TR7s (they are really cheap when they don't run) into TR8s by installing used fuel-injected 4.6-liter V-8s from old Range Rovers and Discovery(s)? Then just add a monochrome interior (plaid is so polyester/disco era!), 2.5 mph body-colored bumpers, 4-wheel disc brakes, electric windows, air conditioning (it was Delco after all), and a 6-speaker + subwoofer stereo with CD changer. Maybe even add little British flags on the rear quarters!

If it was priced under $30,000, think there would be a market? How about if we made a movie first--"The Return of the Wedge"--with Peter Sellers? Oh, wait, he's gone--how about John Cleese? Or maybe "The Italian Job Redux" with TR8s instead of Minis? Think Richard Branson would finance it?

Oh, well, you can't say I didn't try! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif

Actually there are some very cool conversions being done out there, including V6 (ex Buick) Turbos. To move to the 4.6 or 4.9 engine requires some cutting, but you can move up to the 3.9 with like a sut and paste job. With Turbo it'd make a wicked fast little car.

The acres of 1970's plastic that stand in for a dash would need to be worked on.

Too, bad it won't happen.
