MGB-GT Triumph Interloper with MGB GT Question

Dear MG Lovers,

I hope all is well with you over here. I have lurked hereabouts for a while and I contribute a little bit over on the Triumph board - usually inane questions due to my complete lack of mechanical ability.

Anyway, about three weeks ago I sold my TR6. I need a car with a backseat as my wife and I have a little one. I pretty much had my mind made up that I was going to purchase a Stag. However, I recently found a great MGB GT that I am considering.

Growing up, my Mom had a GT and my little sister and I used the back seat quite a bit. As we all know, that was the good old days - and I am only in my 30s - safety is taken quite a bit more seriously now.

Do any of you actually use the backseats for children passengers? If so, how tight a squeeze is it, and can you fit a baby seat? Sorry, my memory is not what it used to be. I bet I was uncomfortable in the back seat, but can't quite remember.

Many thanks,

TED

If you do get a GT, made sure you get a good seat achor kit for the baby seat. The Stag is a lot bigger. But, as the father of 2, let me recommend that you think 4 doors...especially for your wife's sake. We even found the 2 door Cherokee a PIA to get the kids in and out of with car seats. So, for safety and ease, do what we did...get a SURBURBAN /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Good luck!

The back seat in a GT isn't so much of a seat as it is something in the way of useable cargo space. You could rig up some anchors for a child seat or two and I'm sure it would work just fine. However it will be a tight fit getting the thing in and out over the front seats. If you buy a '60s car you will have an easier time with this as the front seats will not have headrests to get in the way.

Overall the GT is a great car and very, very sturdy. I have a lot of photos of wrecked MGs and the GTs do extremely well by the looks of things. They are also fairly reliable creatures once sorted and parts are cheap and plentiful. Good luck with your decision! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif Wife has trouble getting under the steering wheel is all. I kinda like that as I get to drive all the time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/patriot.gif

Love your spirit, but must agree with Bruce....MGB GT won't make much of a family car. As an occasional ride to transport the kids...yes. Make sure you securly anchor the belts. After they gro a bit, the back seat gets small REAL fast! I think you'll find the B GT will be more reliable than the Stag.

I used to be a social worker in Chicago when I had a 74 GT. One time I had to unfortunately relocate some children. One kid sat in the back seat very comfortably, like it was built for a 2-3 year old. The other one crawled under the passenger footwell and put her ear to the little speaker to listen to the radio! The situation was totally unsafe looking back, but we all had bigger problems to worry about. I must say it was really cool to use the car as a kiddie-mover, and we got nothing but looks when people passed us on the highway and saw a little head looking out the rear window of an MG!
