My BMIHT Certificate states that my TR4 was shipped from Liverpool aboard the California Star. Did a little searching and found it. My car's first boat ride!

A perilous journey, no doubt! :jester:

Interesting. I've got to dig my certificate out and find a picture of the ship.

Mine didn't list a ship, just destination as as Hawaii, presumably to a US military officer or such. This was one year before Hawaii joined the U.S. in 1959. I wonder what route the car traveled from England.

The Hawaii license plate read Aloha in 1958, not Aloha State as it was changed to in 1959. Otherwise the same.

OK, mine came out of the Seaforth Dock in Liverpool. Here's a collage of the ship(s), the port and what looks like some Triumphs waiting to be loaded. Click on them for a bigger view.

There are some other funny looking cars there, but a lot of Triumphs to add some class to the shipment.

Doesn't the picture look like the Brit's were thinking: "Let's hurry up and get these cars over there before those Yanks change their minds."

.

Now we know where the rust first started.

I think that you and Ray each have it partly right.

"Let's get these over there before they rust out sitting here"

My Cetificate does not specify a ship... could you tell me what dates yours show (I suppose 'despatch date' would be the most relvant. Thanks!

FWIW -- My TR4 was originally sold in Hawaii but the cert shows it shipped to Cal Sales in LA. This was in 1964.

I have 2 certificates. The first is for a TR4, Date of dispatch: 19 December 1963, Destination: San Francisco, Shipped from Liverpool aboard the vessel 'California Star'. The second is for a TR3B, Date of dispatch 29 August 1962, Destination: Boston, Shipped from Gladstone Dock, Liverpool aboard the vessel 'American Press'. I cannot find a pix of the American Press but I found it was owned By Lykes Steamship Company, Tampa, Florida.
