Triumph 2000 Steering Box

Helping a friend who has a lot of play in the steering of his 1948 Triumph 2000.

We've got the box apart -- goodness, that is a totally different design than the TR3 box -- Triumph sometimes seemed to take the attitude 'Why use 1 part when 5 will do?'.

Anyway, the culprit is the pair of bushings on the vertical shaft. They appear to be 1" OD and 1" length. Exact ID not known due to wear.

Anyone know a source for these or the exact spec if they may be obtainable in a generic form?

Couldn't one long bushing be used instead of a pair (indeed perhaps the original was one long bushing and the pair was the result of a long ago rebuild)?

Worst case I suppose is that we just get a bushing with a too small ID an ream it to the size needed. That at least would allow the shaft to be dressed as it also has some slight wear.

Other issue is the felt seal at the lower end of the shaft (hard as a rock). Is there a modern seal (like a Garlock Seal) that would work in there?

Any advice appreciated.

Hello Geo,

I think you have answered your own question, just about. I think it will be easier to make or have made a new bush and if one will suffice, why not?
What about adapting a standard lip seal to replace the felt, the other suggestion is a rubber 'O' ring if that is feasible?

Thanks. I expect you're right that making it to fit is the way to go.

Was realy amaxed at the complex and sturdy mechanism inside this gadget -- not subject to wear on a little peg like the TR2/3. Guess in that case the bushing becomes the weak link.
