I have a friend with a 63 series l E-type coupe. When asked why he doesn't venture out of the garage often he answers that the three SUs are a mystery to him. When adjusted per his well worn Haynes manual, the black smoke rolls out the tail pipe and plugs are quickly fouled. I have not been envolved with his attempts but he says the float levels are correct, throttle shafts are tight, timing is exact, etc.

Any suggestions, in a check list form, to pass on?

It's too rich. Check the fuel pressure and see if it is in specs or too high. Recheck the floats. Just because the Haynes says does not make it so. You may have to adjust differently to get it right. Make sure they are synchronised and the butterflys are exact to each other. Make sure the mixture needles are set at the right height. Check and make sure the oil in top is at right level.
1. check that all butterflies are same.
2. make sure floats are same
3. make sure mixture needles are same
4. make sure linkages move same
5. needle seats clean
6. oil in dampers full

Synchronising is a must and throttle stops ( butterflys ) critical.

If they have the original carb kits and have never been rebuilt with alcohol/ethanol kits, time to do it. You use more ethonal in carbs than pure gasoline and they may need tweeking to balance this out.
