trim removal question

I am so close to finally having this car dismantled. Anyway, last night I started to remove the chrome strip on the bottom side of the car (between the car color and black bottom) I removed the nut in the front fender and gently started to pry back the strip. Suddenly there was a "pop" and about a foot peeled away leaving a little square of metal on the body. Is this right? Did I pull the bolt out? If so, where would I find the nut? Help!

TIA for your reply
JP

The square of metal you refer to are the clips which should be pop riveted to the body, or it may be the bolt head referred to below.

On my 76 there is one bolt/nut at the forward end of the trim piece. The "slider" which forms the head of the "bolt" actually fits into the end of the track on the back of the trim and can move laterally to help align the piece on the car. The nut for this is located on the back of the fender in a narrow trough. It is a bit of a pain to remove, but not impossible. The clips are designed so that installation (after the nut is loosely tightened) is by hooking the top edge of the track on the clip and applying pressure to the bottom edge. All being well the piece will snap into place, one clip at a time. Then you can fully tighten the nut.

To remove these trim pieces you should first back off the forward end nut, then pry gently on the bottom of the piece. This will spring the bottom track from the clips and allow you to lift the piece off.

This may be TMI, but I found out all of this stuff the hard way myself.

Well said als /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

and as an aside to the Midget, On the B there is about the same set up abut there is one that is the key, in other words it will be the first one when installing and the last one when removing. IIRC it is the one in the center of the door, all the foward on the fender and all the way to the rear on the quarter panel. If you try to start removing at this piece you will just end up bending the trim piece. Not good. this key piece will not just pop on and off it must be slid on and off, the otheres are kinda like a snap together fasteners.
