I want to buy a trickle charger and am a little confused if I need a special one for my Braille Battery.
It's not a regular type battery and they talk about their charger but I don't know if it's required or just a sales pitch. Will a regular trickle charger work?
 
Howdy Don!

I had a Braille in my Lotus Elise, and the computer used to suck the life out of the battery. I eventually mounted a Battery Tender brand trickle charger, Model 800 (waterproof) in the trunk to keep it charged. I used the charger for over a year, and never had any problems. I highly recommend the product.

I have 5 Battery Tender brand and they have been great.

Plus Battery Tenders aren't "trickle" chargers - they're far better.

Another option is the Battery Minder. Same idea but slightly different engineering. We use one at work and I have my airplane plugged into one all the time.
 
Can a battery tender be left hooked up to a battery without discharging when un plugged from the 110 circuit? In other words, permanently wired in a system with a remote plug located somewhere out of sight on the car, like a block heater? PJ
 
Yes it can, most all modern battery "tenders" are designed to be hard wired onto the vehicle....Think about it I can sell you one for each toy.

In all seriousness, unless Don is using a lithium Braille it's probably just an AGM battery like what I've got in the Miata. I switched from a regular unsealed lead-acid battery to a Concorde AGM in the airplane nearly two years ago. Last year I started maintaining it with the battery minder with a temperature prob.
 
Thanks for the suggestions. Received my Battery Tender Jr. yesterday and it is hooked up and doings its work as I type.

At work the elevators all have announce the floor, which would be great for any vision impaired individuals who work or visit. I am however somewhat worried by the fact that someone thought it was necessary in the parking garage.

Scott, is the AGM a gel battery or sealed maintenance free conventional? I've never heard the term before. PJ

Tom cited it. It's sealed, maintenance free, etc. Optima batteries are AGM.
