I have noticed in Jaguar books that when the car is equipped with the B/W automatic there is an option for an intermediate hold switch usually placed in the upper portion of the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel on a left hand driver. It would be great to install this switch which keeps the automatic in second gear until the switch is "switched" then onto third gear. The transmission does kick down into second when needed, however, on occasions second gear would be great for in town driving and when passing etc. Is this just an electrical device that can be wired from the transmission? I have a 1959 MK1 if that makes any difference. Any incite would be appreciated. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
Sorry about the delay. I've been swamped at City Hall. There actually is no second gear selection. There is a low and a drive but that's it. Dropping down into low does just that......and at 45 MPH it can be a wild experience. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
The BW transmission for the Mark I was not the best automatic that Jaguar offered. Originally adapted from a Studebaker application, its performance options are limited and spare parts are next to impossible to find. I would not recommend complicating it further with a 2cnd speed switch. I would recommend investigating as to whether the BW transmission (type 65) used in the XJ6 series 3s could be retro'd to a Mark I with your Jag block.
 
Thanks Jack for the advice. After I first purchased the car I wanted to have the transmission serviced. The closest place was 300 miles away. I told the guy it was leaking a bit. He laughted and said if that was the only problem I should live with it. It works fine and is a strong shifting unit so that is not a problem. I will just learn to live with it around town. Just one more quick question. If I was to acquire a 1966-69 XKE automatic did Jaguar improve on that unit or is it still the old style B/W.? Being stuck with the automatic as the only option does limit the selection but it's better than not driving at all...

The E type automatic is a better unit than the Studebaker unit but the XJ6 series 3 (80 to 87) is the best of the bunch.
 
Thanks for the information. If you happen to come across a driver's quality XKE automatic let me know. I have a serious buyer (with money!) who is interested in my MK1.

Mark, It must be a small world. (too bad it is not a small drive from WA to AL. I have just located an E type 2 plus 2 series 3 automatic this past week. It has been in storage about 5 years and it is now coming to my Toy Store to make it run again. It is definitely for sale as its present owner has lost interest. It is fully equipped including air conditioning installed by the original dealer. Chrome wire wheels and a very nice light tan interior in leather sets it off. The body appears to have no rust and has no visible signs of collision damage. The chrome is complete and excellent. My service order is to make it run and install a new windshield as the present one has delaminated. A previous repaint in red(kinda orange) was not done with proper preparation and will have to be stripped to metal in order to do justice to the very straight and rust-free body. This is an unusual find and will probably sell for $20K plus or minus. Let me know if you are interested. Since I am a full service restoration shop we might be able to work a favorable deal with the owner. Best regards, Jack Farrington
