My wife's 2006 mini at 30,000 miles just needed a new transmission. It is a manual 5 speed. It began making a slight whirring sound. We took it to the dealer, and they diagnosed it right away as a transmission problem. They replaced the transmission under warranty. They wouldn't, (couldn't) tell me exactly what the issue was, but because of the quick diagnosis, I suspect this may be a fairly common occurrance. Has anyone else experienced similar problems?
The other issue we had was a cracked thermostat housing at about 20,000 miles. I raelly love the mini, but I am beginning to have my doubts about this one. Maybe I should buy the extended warranty?
 
It seems the Standard MINI had some problems with the thermostat housings, some not all. Transmissions 05 and newer are Gretrag and are pretty durable. Whirring sound may have been a throwout bearing or syncronizers. Dealer does not fix individual problems therefore and full replacement. Most failures are in 2nd gear from a 1-2 fast shift in speed mode. I have 60K in an 03 S and have not had any problems except a steering angle sensor, not cheap but rated a ** on DIY repair. The exteneded warranty can cost $2000 and up. For instance it will cover rotors and pads, dealer price $1200. These can be purchased aftermarket in upgrade for $500. Warranty is up to you, but there are a few independent shops that do MINI work.
