TR5/TR250 Transmission

I need some advise. My TR-250 has always had this problem since I owned it in 1975. The transmission will pop out of 3rd gear if I don't keep my hand on the shifter. I had a new transmission rebuilt kit put in, but it did not fix my problem. I talked with the tech guys at Rimmer Bros. in England and they said it could be the "detent balls and spring" on the selector shaft. Would like to get some good advise on this issue. Thanks and Happy Fathers day to all.

That would be the most likely cause. Other possible causes would be a loose end on the shifter rod, mis-located shifter fork, worn 3/4 hub, or worn detent on the shifter rod.

The detent and balls can be inspected and/or replaced with a magnet, usually without having to remove the tranny cover...so I would start there.

Thanks for your speedy reply. I forgot to ask if the ball and spring could be replaced without removing the trans. Thanks again.

If you rule out the "easy" culprits like the gear stick gator or the detent springs in the top cover, then the remaining suspects would be the detent springs in the synchro hubs or the 2nd gear top hat bushing which often breaks at the rim. This break causes excessive end play and popping out of 3rd gear.

thanks for the headsup. I will relay this to my mechanic.
