Transmission Troubles

Offline
A 1275 with stock 4 speed (in my Rochdale Olympic, but please don't hold that against me....):

I was running pretty hard uphill (in the scenic Cairngorm mountains of Scotland, if that matters) in second gear at a goodly rate when there was a loud noise- and the transmission sounded like a can of rocks rattling for a moment then ceased the racket; and the car lost power.

A broken transmission with only first, fourth and reverse operating.

So I drove 170 miles home.

The only forewarnng/symptom was that the previous day I'd lost synchronization between third and fourth, and had to double clutch to shift between them.

What'd I break?

I presume it's serious and have acquired a replacement used transmission; but I'm thinking I should rebuild it before installation, and that maybe I'd be better off making one better one from the two I've got instead of just using what sitting on the workbench just begging to be messed about with....

ISTR that there was a thread in the past week or so on the subject of rebuilding and, maybe, combining parts from several trannies. Someone noted that there are differences from one to another, so search out this thread. The explaination is there. Good Luck.
