I rebuilt my TR4A top cover last year--with major help from this forum.

I set the pull weight for each shaft and installed new balls and plungers. In the case of 3rd/4th gear, as I recall, a ball was replaced by a plunger in later years, so I did that.

Everything is OK for now, so I think I did it all correctly, though is seems first is a bit hard to "slide into."

I have two questions: After I set the tension using those little screw fittings and a standard fishing scale, was I supposed to fill the adjusting hole above the screw with some sort of adhesive to make sure the screws wouldn't vibrate back up? I just can't remember what I did there, but I "believe" I just filled the voids with Permatex Red.

Also, since Moss shows balls or, alternatively, plungers for the 3rd/4th detent from model to model in the later cars in the TR4 series, but since the shafts are unchanged in the TR4 Series, am I correct that you can use either the ball or the plunger but that the plunger eventually was deemed better to avoid slipping out of gear?

Yeah, the plunger change was to prevent slipping out of 3rd gear. The factory note says it can be retrofit to earlier cars, so you could probably use the ball if you want to. But the change was early TR4 so your 4A should have had the plunger originally, and I can't see why you would want to go backwards.

The book calls for shims to adjust the detent force, but I don't see any reason RTV wouldn't do. I sure wouldn't pull it back apart for that!
