Has anyone rebuilt their own transmission? I'm doing a complete restoration and am thinking of rebuilding the transmission myself. What are the pitfalls and nuances of such a project? Also, I'm adding overdrive to my non-overdrive 4-speed. Already acquired a rebuilt J-type unit but still need a new mainshaft, cam, key, speedo angle drive etc. Share your experiences.
 
Can't say I've done it myself, but from some friends who have undertaken something like that I can say that there are lots of little parts to be mindful of, especially when taking the synchro sets apart. There are sometimes little balls with springs behind them that will come flying out when you pull the synchro hubs apart. Otherwise, the needle roller bearings usually need some means of holding them in place while you assemble things, and many parts are very particular about being oriented the right way. Even if a part like a gear appears to be symmetrical, make sure it goes back together the way it came out. Case in point, a friend of mine was telling me how a gear appeared symmetrical, but it turns out the hub was offset slightly and wouldn't work when he put it in the wrong way. If you have access to a digital camera, it would be extremely helpful to take lots of pictures as you take things apart, and use lots of masking tape and/or a permanent marker to label pieces as you take them apart.
