Transmission Problems

Please Help!
Just finished transmission rebuild. Replaced first gear, reverse gear and lay gear in 1960 Bugeye. Now it pops out of reverse and there is a loud whine when in first and reverse.
Don't have a clue what is wrong. Had help from an experienced mechanic. Thanks in advance for any help or advise.

yep first will whine, never tried to go fast enough in reverse to get a whine.

The whine is very typical of the tight gear interface for these "straight-cut" gears. 1st, Rev. and the laygear for both are straight cut. Only the input drop to the laygear, 2nd and 3rd are helical gears and hence a good bit quieter. Poping out sounds like a detent issue on reverse. Reverse's detent is on the bottom of the gearbox in the front hole under the 9/16" headed short bolt. Make sure you have a proper fill on the gearbox, using a good quality 20w50 and turn the CD or radio up a notch or two.

BTW, If you are in the Robin Rd. area across from the church off NC150, look up my buddy. He is a cerified LBC nut. 2- Spridget Squarebody HP SCCA racers, 1- 1973 Squarebody street, 1-Bugeye Vintage Racer, 1-Bugeye street and a basement full of 40+ years of LBC addiction. Lotus Elan and street Bugeye in his youthful past as well. Just look for all the street cars and trailer in the drive. Both he and his girlfriend are life long SCCA types.

Take care,
Mike Miller
