Transmission OD Leaks Found

OK, do I dare take that entire plate off? Any special gasket material or sealer needed? I'm hoping that removal of the plate won't lead to disassembling internal parts as well. thx

I guess I've answered my own question. That Buckeye Article says it all. It's quite complex. I better start reading. I'm not sure I'll have the guts to remove all that "stuff," but let's see . . .

Don, I would suggest you not attempt removing that plate, unless you are going to remove the OD from the car. The plate compresses the two big accumulator springs (or maybe you have the IRS version with only one spring), which are going to want to fall down out of place with the plate vertical.

Won't I be OK if I just don't pull that spring out, but just let it expand slowly. Then, re-compress it. With those long studs couldn't I reach behind with a screwdriver and keep that spring square?

Or are you saying that the piston will somehow get out of place?

(I hope I'm not subconsciously looking for an excuse to pull that transmission)

Well, it might be OK; I've never actually tried it. Let us know how you get on.

I have the end plate now removed, and just like the Buckeye Article indicates, the spring is right there. What has me totally puzzled is that hole in the middle shown below. It definitely looks like it is designed to hold some kind of rod. What is that?

Note that the area around the hole even looks worn, as if there has been rotation there.

Any help on what I'm seeing here. I don't see any rod or shaft that fits into that hole, and can't really explain it.

Thanks

I don't believe anything specific fits in that hole - but I'm more used to seeing what Randall showed - perhaps a short dowel pin would be there. Not much purpose other than to keep the spring centered.
