Transmission mount bolts

Anyone have a good source for the two long mounting bolts for the bottom of the transmission mount? The bolt size is:

3/8 x 24, 3-1/4" long (grade 5 or 8)

I've called a couple local places, and they don't have this size. I only need two of them, and most of the online sites seem to want me to buy a box of 50.

Any thoughts?

Buy a 3-1/2 and cut it down or add two washers. If you don't have them local try McMaster-Carr or Bolt Depot

Go to a Farm Supply Store. That's where I found mine.

Why bother with Grade 5 or Grade 8? They're never gonna have the kind of load the would EVER need more than a standard bolt.

Thanks all for the ideas. I found out that my town has a Fastenal store, and they were able to get a couple sent in from another location for just a couple dollars.

Strange the stuff that Moss Europe has that Moss US doesn't.

As to the grade 5/grade 8 question -- I know they're probably overkill in this application, but the yellow zinc coating is a nice touch and it's worth it to me to use. Necessary, probably not, but I like it.

Ok Drew, about putting those in.

They go in before the side ones in the cockpit. They go in while the engine is still on the hoist. It should be movable with out a lot of effort.

Find the hole with a phillips screwdriver then feed the bolt in, you will need to wiggle the tranny and engine up and down a bit and side to side a bit to get the bolt started.

It can be a real pain, expect it to be.

Oh fun! I read in one of your earlier posts about doing those bottom bolts first -- hence my search for the bolts now.

I'm getting used to the "it can be a real pain" part of the restoration process.

Drew, you and I could do it in five min or less. But then I have had practice.

On your first go you may get lucky and do it just as fast.

I'm hoping it will go in nice and easy. Don't really expect too much trouble, I just take my time.

I have a long alignment punch that makes the job easy.

Jack/Drew

I am in the process of reinstalling my bolts on my 69 Sprite (still trying to finish the rivergate swap). I have a situation where one of the bolt hole sets (the driver side) line up fine and the bolt went in great. The passenger side for some reason doesn't seem to align right... it appears that the hole on the cross member is a shade off and doesn't go straight to the aligned holes from the bottom of the car and the one on the bottom of the tranny mounting bracket. Have you ever heard of this and is there something that can be done to get this all aligned?

Thanks

Larry Swofford

There is a bit of flexibility in the rubber mounting blocks to the tranny which will allow the bracket to be shifted a little bit! I have used a wooden dowel to help line up the holes (it also helps to install the bolt that goes through the tunnel in the interior first!)You may have to apply a bit of "upward" pressure to the tranny while trying to shift the bracket!

Move the front of the engine from side to side. Hope you have not installed the motor mounts yet.

Not yet, Hap. Just picked up my shiny bolts last night. My sister's in town this weekend, and I'm going to press her into duty to give me a hand. A fun family project!
