hello all, how can you check a tranny to tell if its ok if its not in a car thanks.also its a 1275 ribcase 1972 midget
 
Can mostly be done but takes experience.

Take the side cover off and see if it is not chiped or worn mostly is about all.

Careful with the detents and springs.
 
shift it while the covers off
to see if it moves freely...
also turn one side of the shaft
while holding the other end
while in/out of gear
to see if anything locks/slips etc.....z
 
Unfortunately the most common problem with the Spridget transmissions is the whining in first/reverse and when you take the side-cover off you can't see the teeth on the first-gear slider and thus you can't tell if it will whine. Even if it is noisy it will continue to run for a long time before giving you trouble.
As Zimmy says if it shifts freely, etc then go for it.

If it's out as you say, don't forget to "jiggle" the input and output shafts to check for play and check how smoothly they turn/spin through each gear! :wink:
If there are problems with individual gears you may be able to "feel them click" or jam up as you turn the tranny. Then look into the side-cover for a visual inspection.
 
Far as I know first and reverse are square cut gears and whine.

I think your right Jack, they are square cut and should whine-- I hope one wouldn't be too worried about buying a Spridget with a first gear whine. Race cars that utilize square-cut gears whine like crazy! Enough to make you go crazy!
