Transmission identification help

I am looking for a 73 or newer ribcase. I see ribcases all the time, but is there some way to identify these by serial number? If not, how can you tell without taking the transmission apart? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Kevin

Interprete what you are looking for as simply a 73 or 74. The last years of Spridget rib cases were identifiable by the neutral interlock connection on the shift tower. This is an electrical plunger switch connection on the drivers side of the tower. It simply required the gearbox to be in neutral before starting the engine.

Also, on the back of the "ear" just in front of the tail housing transmission mount on the driver side is a date stamp. In the style of yy/m/dd. The ear is on the main case right at the back of it. It is directly opposite the ear or boss on the side plate.

All the Spridgets from about 1961 through 1974 have the same gear ratios. The later gearboxes added the reverse light switch and then the neutral start interlock switch, but that's about it.

Mike, I thought that the later rib-case's were more desireable than the early. Strength issue???

Kurt.

Just back in the office from racing in Memphis. 2-third places. Had a good time and some good BBQ.

Some of the very early rib-case gearboxes might have the bronze bushes under 2nd/3rd in them from the smooth case construction. Fairly common in the Morris Minor applications. These would not be as desirable as the ones using the needle rollers. This is the only "Strength" issue I can readily think of. There are some gear differences between very early and later boxes, mainly tooth shape, but that really doesn't affect the strength perspective. These early rib-case gearboxes use some odd input/laygear setups and are rather hard to find replacements.

Later Rib-cases with the 200 and 1100 series gears are all interchangeable and virtually the same gearbox even though the parts are numbered slightly different. The factory 3/4 slide gear is numbered 22G95 and 22G410. These are interchangeable as well.

Nice going, Memphis is a tough track! Last time I was over there helping Phil & Tony Chiles in the pits. Then pouring rain halted the festivities.

Thanks,

That was the last time they raced at Memphis until this past weekend. On Saturday, it started sprinkling about Lap 6 of the 26 scheduled. About lap 11, a MX-5 slapped the wall 3-4 times or more coming onto the drag strip and they waved the checker on Lap 13 and called it a day. Sunday was sunny and nice and we ran all 26 laps.

That Drag strip entry can be a bugger, a Red FP RH drive car from St Louis crashed in the damp when I was there. Once he started skating about the starting line he went back and forth between the walls until he scrubbed off all of his speed. :wall: Shook him up too!! He had to be moving pretty good in third coming full bore out of the staging lanes.

I need to go over there next time to watch.

Are they running a fall race this year?
