Trying to find out more info on the tranny for my 64 BJ8. One of the casting boss's is stamped M 1284 and on the top near the dipstick there is what looks like a aluminum washer brass rivited to the case with "TYPE 29 R 4" on it. Can anyone tell me what this means and are there any substantial differences between the trannys other than shifter position and with or w/o OD. Thanks.

John

Hi John, at the very top of the bellhousing's flange you should find the following number: 22B173-Have no reference to the other numbers you quoted. If you find an AEC number in that location then it may not be a BJ8 box?---Keoke

Hello John Progress, it may help you to purchase the BJ7/BJ8 parts manual. Reprints I believe are still available through AHCA or maybe Editor Reid can give more info on them.Bundyrum.

Keoke,
I did find those numbers on the top of the flange. Are all the BJ8 transmissions the same? As best as I can tell this transmission has not been apart. Thanks and have a good day.

John

HI John, Barring a PO mixing parts the trannies are essentially all the same. All internal parts will contain 22BXXX type part numbers. If it works good let it alone---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Keoke,
The car has not been run for about 10 years and then only aroung a parking lot for a bit, never was licensed. The PO said it was ok but it really is an unknown. A look inside indicated no broken parts but I don't know about the syncros or layshaft. I guess a dissassembly is in order. Thanks and have a good day!

Hello John Progress, the numbers/letter on the brass tag are as follows, the 29 means the gearbox was fitted to a 2900 cc series engine. The R is that the gearbox has overdrive which you could probably figure out yourself anyway. Regards, BUNDYRUM.

gentleman, while on the subject of trasmissions,i recently inquired at a local "alleged" parts supplier as to the purchase of a replacement clutch assembly for my 63 bj7,i was told id have to bring it in to "match" it up to my type, ive done several healey clutch replacements, well o.k it was befor we landed on the moon i must admitt, never the less id not been asked to do this befor, was i just super lucky in the past or are the dif.between a bj7 clutch and bj8 that differant? diam.? thickness? if so then i musta used up all my luck in the 60's,that would explain alot! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

hello anthony7777, yes the BJ& and BJ8 clutches are different, but it's easy enough to fit a BJ8 clutch to the BJ7. I think the BJ8 clutch is lighter, i have one in my BN7. Regards, BUNDYRUM.

bundyrum, thanks, may i assume the fork and throw out bearing are also re-usable/interchangable? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif

Well the fork you can keep but the throwout bearings are not interchangeble.- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif--Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hello Keoke, why did you have to go and say a thing like that. "Well the fork you can keep but the throwout bearings are not interchangeable" Now i cannot remember which throwout bearing i used when i fitted the BJ8 clutch and BJ7 transmission into my BN7. This also prompted me to look at my parts manual for the BJ7/BJ8. (Mine is publication # AKD 3523 which incidently i just realised doesn't give a final car and engine serial # for the BJ8). The way i read it it seems the diaphragm clutch assy was fitted to late BJ7 cars starting at 29F-H4879. The BJ8 started at 29K-H101. If anyone has a later parts manual it would be interesting to see what it says.
Hello John Progress, i left some info off my answer above, the number stamped on the side of the main transmission case is supposed to be the transmission number. Exactly what that means is anyones' guess.
Regards, BUNDYRUM.
