TR2/3/3A Transmission Front Cover

Folks,

According to the Moss catalog, the front transmission covers for a TR2 through TR4 "should not be interchanged" with the front cover from a TR4A. However, it goes on to say that if it is "absolute necessary", the shorter TR4A cover could be used on the TR3 through TR4 transmission even though it is 3/8-inch shorter. Naturally, the shorter TR2 through TR4 cover is not available. And also naturally, the Victoria British catalog does not provide this infomation, but rather states that the shorter front cover will work on all TR2 through TR4A transmissions. And finally, naturally, since that nasty Victoria British is just 20 minutes from my house, that is where I purchased a new front cover for my TR3A transmission.

Has anyone had any experience with using the shorter front cover from the TR4A on an earlier car?

Thanks.
Ron

I'm running the shorter cover on my current TR3, and the TR3A I had before. (Actually, I shortened a long one to go with the 4A clutch I'm using.) Seems to work fine. As I recall, the factory didn't even change the part number, so presumably they felt the shorter cover could be used in all applications as well.

I've talked to others who are using the short cover with the TR3/4 clutch, and they all said it works fine as well.

Thanks, Randall.

The car's original long cover is very scared up on the inside where the seal goes, probably from people trying to remove old seals. So I felt it was best to go with a new cover.
It is very difficult to get the new seal in either cover. I will have a friend try today using a press.

It shouldn't be that hard to tap the new seal into place. Makes me wonder if you got the wrong seal somehow. Anyway, good luck!
