Transmission Fluid and Puddle

I've had my car for 1-1/2 years and just checked the transmission fliud level. It showed "Low." Is that OK? If I add fluid, what's a recommended brand. Woudl the same fluid be used in the differential? I'm asking because there was a small puddle at the rear end and the fluid smelled just like the transmission fluid. Never a dull moment with a Healey!

Isn't that how you tell that a Healey has oil, water, differential fluid, shock fluid, etc.? By the puddles beneath it.

Actually, I use Castrol hypoy 80W/90 for the rear end and 30w motor oil for the trans. Check your shocks too and refil with shock oil (Moss Motors). Mine lose a little.

Hi Herb,
See this discussion;

The short answer is that different oils are used in the transmission & axle. Actually the factory recommended 30 wt motor oil in the transmission for the Healey. Triumph with a similar transmission & OD, suggested gear oil. I usually run mine at the "low" level which seems to reduce leakage somewhat. If it gets too low the OD will not work right.

There are many different ideas on what oil to use. I have had very good luck with Redline MT90. Which ever you use, I suggest that you drain & refill. It will take about 4 quarts.
