Transmission drain plug

Started putting the transmission drain plug back in yesterday. Nice and smooth from the first couple of turns then it got very tight and hard to turn. I stopped, backed it out and inspected everything. Nothing seemed abnormal. Tried the filler plug in the drain hole with the same results.

It that normal? If not, suggestions?

Unrelated to the problem..should I use a bit of Teflon tape on the threads?

I think those are tapered... I've had Datsun transmissions for so long that I can not remember.

they are tapered - diffs are the same.

Yeah, mine sticks out so that more that half the threads show (on rib-cage 1275 trans).
I don't think it's a big problem.
The tape won't hurt.

Clean it REAL good and JB Weld a magnet to it...........Will show whats going on in there next time you change the oil.

They are pipe thread. Teflon take is certainly OK.

Definitely tapered. Did the Teflon tape. Filled the transmission with Castrol 10w-30 synthetic then when for the first ride in about four weeks. Felt good. Amazing how well a transmission works with a little lubricant in it!! I believe the popping out of gear in reverse is solved.

Next issue to solve. The master cylinder has been leaking. All the paint on the clutch and brake pedals is long gone.
