trans. rebuild

Offline
ive got my trans out from my 1963 bj7 for a rebuild ive done this several times before many years ago,the reason im doing this is because when down shifting from third to second the transition is a bit "sticky" ill be changing all the synchs. while its open, reading the workshop manual, and other sources of inspiration i opened that puppy up this afternoon i have to say anyone considering doing this would be much better off not even looking at the "moss" parts list blow up of this unit less ya godda buy parts! its a lot easier then those pictures look, im fortunate enough not to have to rebuild the over drive so while the trans. is sitting up right on a couple of pieces of 2x4 removing the main shaft cotter pin nut and washer i was able to slide the o.d. straight up off the trans. hence not needing to do the "wire trick" so far the most difficult thing has been keeping everything clean, id first power washed the unit with hot water and soap, 1800 psi, then pulled it from the car next one gallon of degreaser and both wire and soft brushes, next softer brushes and clean rags with brake cleaner ,unless your able to submerge the entire trans. in some sort of washing vibrating system its hard to get rid of all the grit and sand particles, ill just keep at it, here are some picts. ive taken so for, your best wishes on this project tips, comments,be careful fors,or dont does, etc would be much appreciated, hope youll enjoy this as much as i am, thanks.

Brave man, that's one thing that I do not fancy, but may have to do. I've just pulled my gearbox. Tell me, does the shaft that enters the driven clutch plate have any play in it, mine does.

bob, sorry for the late reply, yes theres about 1/8" travel in the shaft for and aft,, firm in its radius and not sloppy, i believe this amount of travel is acceptable. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

Nope, there should not be any travel in the shaft forward and aft. If there is the input bearing has been improperly shimmed.---Fwiw--Keoke- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/nonod.gif

keoke, is he asking about the input shaft here? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/nonono.gif other response was intended to allow a bit of orbital movement of the shaft. However, it must be small too Anthony.

keoke, that seems "oh moy contrarey" to the same question and your responce to his other post "transmission question" - ya its probably me what im missing here? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

There's some things that make my stomach queasy and the a really bad car wreck, or my gearbox, bring the same sense of fascination and queasiness, like a morbid curiosity that prevents me from looking away...you're a brave man Anthony.

OH they not so bad on the stomache Dar100. But they raise plue /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif with your pocket book.---Keoke- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cryin.gif

keoke, once in indonesia i also had my "plue" raised but thats entirely a different subject, as id expressed i had no side to side movement but 1/8" or less forward and/or aft, i still believe this is acceptable. orbit movement to me would be the most damaging affect /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

7777, be sure and tell the 3/4 gear sychronizer that so he understand too.---Keoke- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

keoke, den maybe dats y i aint got one! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif actually only my second gear gets a bit sticky when down shifting but am changing them all. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

Guys
I guess that you would call it orbital movement, I have since talked to a gear box specialist over here and he confirms that you can get some movement - we are talking very small movement here, due to the length of the first motion shaft and as long as the bearing in the end of the crank is OK there should be no problems.
There is none axially on my box.
