During my initial shakedown runs I noticed the trans will jump into neutral from 4th gear. it seems to stay in gear when I am excellerating but jumps into neutral when I lift off. Any thoughts or direction will be appreciated

HI Kevin R, my experience with this problem has shown the third/fourth gear sliding hub and balk rings to be excessively worn.Additionally, the detents on the shift rails can be worn and the detent springs may have lost their tension on the detent balls--Fwiw---Keoke

Here's a worthless piece of information...Many years ago I owned a bugeye Sprite that had this exact problem. I could not afford the cost of repair so I rigged up a rope with a loop on one the end and anchored the opposite end of the rope to the floor in the space behind the cockpit. Each time I shfted into fourth, I would slip the loop over the shift lever to prevent it from popping out of gear. Sorry, but I've waited a long time for the right moment to relate that story.

Be sure your carpet and rubber boot is not interfering. Or would that be too easy a fix?

Since the trans stays in 3rd gear with no issues I think the springs and balls are all working properly. I have no interior to get in the way. My assumption is the internal parts are worn. That was I crap shoot I was willing to take when I put the trans back in without going through it. Now I need to find the correct color rope to hold it into 4th. I will go through the trans next winter and do it right

thanks for the advice

F.W.I.W , A very long time ago, a friend of mine had an american car that would pop out of high gear sometimes when he let off of the gas. We crawled under the car and found some of the bolts that attach the transmission to the bell housing and bell housing to engine were loose. We simply tightened them all up and it never happened again.

EMS or some similar store, would carry color coordinated climbing rope by the foot... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Many years ago my father had a 1949 series 1 Landrover 80" with that problem, which was cured by a section of inner tube used as a retainer

Just a comment:

The intial problem (of popping out of gear) is often caused by folks who drive while resting their hands on the shifter.
Typically, the problem happens in high gear (since that's the gear that people cruise in).

So what's the moral here? Don't rest your hand on the shifter when you're driving!

In my experience, the actual wear happens on the 4th gear syncro and the conical "recieving area" (for the syncro) on the gearbox input shaft (the one the clutch slides on).

I fixed two Spridget "ribcage" transmissions with this malady and in college, I drove a Spitfire to Florida from NJ using "the rope trick".

My BJ8 did this for awhile and I ignored it because it was intermittent ... then one day it stuck in 4th and wouldn't move. After I got it back from the mechanic (may $$$ later) it never happened again. I wish I could tell you what fixed the problem but the warrning here is "be careful" with the tie backs and other bandaids.
