Trans Flush. Any Ideas?

Jim,

You should be able get 30wt oil at any of the parts houses including the ones you mentioned. Go to the oil section and look for your self. Most computer readers do'nt know anything except whats in the computer. I have found it at Wal-mart and large food stores.

Tony,

My theory is detergent oil keeps by-products from the engine running in suspension until they are removed by the oil filter. Using non detergent in trannys allows them to settle out and be traped by the magnet in the overdrive. This theory breaks down if you have a non overdrive tranny. However I still would use 30wtND. The gunk would just settle to lowest point in the tranny case.

The best deal on non detergent oils is at the Farm Supply type stores around here.

I'm planning on buying some tiny Neodynium magnets on ebay in bulk and epoxying them into the drain plugs of my transmissions, rear pumpkins, etc... on my cars and trucks.

Jerry - that kinda makes sense.....strange I've never had problems with my '79 w/OD since I bought it new....heck, I don't even remember adding any oil since I bought it!

....& are you talking about the magnet by where I change/clean the filter?

Tony,

Yes, the magnets below the basket. I did not have any problems until about 2 years ago. Appearently my 40 year old
OD needed a tune up. (did with a Kerosene flush)
Now works as well as it has since I have owned my BN4. I now change the fluid on a yearly basis using 30wtND oil.

The biggest benefit of non-detergent oil in the trans is that it will foam-up (the detergent is there to prevent foaming mostly). The foam will better tend to leave an oil film on the gears and bearings up high which the detergent oil will not lube.
Foam is not your friend in the engine.
