Trans Flush. Any Ideas?

My trans is stuck in neutral. I can get the shifter to move side to side, but can't get it in any gear. It looks gummed up like Jeff said. Before I yank it does anybody have any thoughts on flushing it out? What to use?

Carb cleaner several cans of it through the shifter and the side cover. Just let it drain and air dry before refilling with 20-50 although it should free up if it is going to long before you put oil in it.

You coul try filling it with ATF and running it a while and also pour some down the shifter hole. Run it for a while and give it time to soak it. Thats pretty slick stuff and its good at cleaning and removing gunk and freeing things up.

I would drain the oil out then over fill with kerosene. All the way to the top. Soak for a couple of days.

I have no indication that there is anything wrong with my tranny and no plans to do anything but reinstall it at the appropriate time - is this (or a proceedure like it) worth doing while the tranny is out of the car?

John-Peter, my car was sitting for a long time and the gear lube was very gummy. I'm trying to get it unstuck. I filled it to the top of the shifter hole with mineral spirits. I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you have the same problem.

Ahh, mineral spirits, good move. In worst case I can not see the flush hurting a darn thing.

I flushed my tranny/OD with Kerosene. The OD was locking up. Filled with Kerosene jacked up the rear and ran for 10-15 minutes. Allowed to drain and refilled with Non detergent 30wt The overdrive now works again. No damage

My car's not running yet, so I just have to let it sit for a few days and see what happens.

The car has been sitting for 15 years - but everything seemd to move when I tried it (clutch was stuck though) - leave well enough alone or try to clean it just in case? Remember, everything is currently out of the car

Hi Jerry, that was good advice. I think you need to emphasise the use of non detergent oil, Single Viscosity, in the transmissions.---Keoke

THAT'S WHAT WE USE IN ALL OF OUR CUSTOMERS AUSTIN HEALEYS.
AND 20/50 VALVOLINE IN THE ENGINE. I ALSO USE ENGINE OIL IN MY DASH POTS.

Oh, let me understand for sure. 20-50 in the engine and what in the tranny 30W or 20W or what?????

Thanks Jerry always nice to have some one with lots of customer experience step up.

Jack,

30wt non detergent engine oil in tranny with or without OD.

Oh, thanks. I was useing 20-50 same as engine. Will change when I pull to replace oil pump.

Where can you get just straight 30 wt non-detergent oil? When I ask the guys as Pep Boys, Autozone, or Advance they look at me like the planet Mars has just sprung forth from my left nostril.

Interesting, Jerry, the MG owners manual calls for the same oil as the engine...

That was one of the recommended oils in the orginal book.

Jim,

We get 30wt non detergent at all of these parts houses. Do not ask parts readers, go to the oil section of the store and look your self.

I get my 30 WT non-detergent at NAPA. It is in a NAPA brand blue qt. container.
