Tranny question on BN2 side shift

Hey all,
Not sure how to describe this but occasionally when I go to shift from reverse to 1st or 1st to reverse the gear shift seems to "catch" and not want to go into any gear. Not being real astute on transmissions but looking at the shop manual, etc, could this simply be a problem with the actual gear shift lever being some what loose as in moves around easily or something more serious ? When this happens I can play with it a bit, comes unstuck and trans always shifts fine,no loud gear noise, everything works great. Thanks for any advice or suggestions.
Regards,
Mike

Sounds like the bushing at the bottom of the lever is worn (or missing).

Another possibility is that the fasteners around the ball-fulcrum (of the lever) are not all secure as they should be.

I think both are non synchro, i have found that a shift into second and then try first or reverse seems to line the cogs up

Thanks y'all ! Going to check out the bushing Randy mentioned and the condition of the packing pieces where the gear lever attaches to the tranny.
Regards,
Mike

howdy,
i also have a lazy gear box [per the symptom described]

I have posted about this before and it still happens to me once on a while. It is so infrequent that when it does happen it is totally unexpected and I cann't seem to relate it to anything I just did. It is as though there is a gear pattern of sorts but it is all wrong and something inside the gearbox is not lining up. When this happens and I think I've found a gear and let the clutch out it is as if the gearbox is either siezed or in gear and able to dive the wheels, but unable to know exactly which gear or to find the next one. Usually an amount of shifter and clutch movement and all of a sudden eveything is normal again. It never seems to happen twice during any day of driving. I've gone hundreds of miles of stop and go without an occurrence. If I coould describe the feel, it would be as though the bushing on the bottom of the shift lever came out of the socket and I was just pushing the socket on the control shaft around until somehow it pops back in. I've had it apart several times and everything looks good. The gearbox and overdrive work flawlessly other thhan this and I haven't put more than 300 miles on between gearbox oil changes because I want to know if there is even a trace of metal contamination. If it would just happen more frequently I could probably figure it out. I knew I wasn't alone.

This same thing happens to me about once/driving season for 30 years. Nothing to do but shift to neutral and let clutch out and put back in and shift again. It only happens going into 1st gear. I've recently been starting in 2nd unless on a hill.
