Tranny option on 58 sprite

Re: Tranny option on 58 sprite what is wrong

That may be the case as the shaft has more side play than the other one. The front cover where the shaft goes through seems to have a bigger gap. Most of the metal is a silver color dust. Which would indicate that aluminum was wearing.
How hard is it to get that front bearing out. I can see the ring that holds it. That should not be too hard to get off. But the bearing may have to be drifted from the inside
Thanks

Re: Tranny option on 58 sprite what is wrong

The characteristic noise you hear in first and reverse that is RPM dependent is most likely the layshaft bearings. The layshaft will be badly galled and the roller bearings will look bad. The modern day (Mo$$)replacement layshafts are crap. MiniMania had hardened layshafts for some time, don't know if they still do.

Its such a common wear point that you shouldn't put yours back together without checking it very carefully.

HI
David Hesse

What tranny do you use in your race car/
How much do the cost?
Thanks

Then the next question
this is on the front nut on the tranny. It looks to be 1 1/4 inch. Looks like I need to reconfigure a 1 1/4 socket to remove it.
Like cut the top off and weld on a pipe bigger than the shaft and use a pipe wrench on it.
Any other way?
thanks

Sim, I'll check the trannys next time I'm at the shop. Most likely won't be till this weekend. They should both be good useable trannys.

In the racecar, I've got an older WeRace Dog-engagement close ratio box. 1st gear is about 1.67:1, or approximately between 2nd and 3rd on most boxes. Fun to get it rolling, but on the track you have 4 useable gears. A Taylor made dog-box is in the neighborhood of $5000+. My backup tranny is a SC/CR box. Both boxes are in the rib-case trans casing.

Re: Tranny option on 58 sprite what is wrong

It would be hard to use Werace tranny the way I drive.
Please check on the ones at the shop. I am not into hording as some one else may have the same problem as I do and may need the other one. But If you want to get rid of both, I will take them. Just let me know how much.
thanks

That third spring like the two that came from under the side cover you refered to a couple of posts back more than likely came from the detent located at the bottom of the tranny (there are 2 plugs located at the bottom - consult a manual as to which is which!)
