Tranny option on 58 sprite

the tranny that I plan to use has the forks on the other side. Looks like if I drill and tap new holes for the slave cylinder and use the shift fork plate from the damaged tranny to replace the other plate, all should be ok. Right or wrong?

Hi
Thanks I was hopping for that. Love that Brit engineering
Is the gearing the same?
Sim

I think the Morris tranny has different gearing, though I don't know what the differences are!

The diff ratio on a Minor was 4.55:1 as opposed to 4.22:1 on a Sprite, if that gives you any clue.
Why bother with a smoothcase, anyway? Unless you're absolutely hooked on original appearances.
Jeff

The only reason for the smoothcase is I have it on hand and cost is less. Also I only drive this car around town and hardly ever get to 50 MPH Most trips are under 5 miles
When I want to go longer and faster I take the 1988 944 out.
Had to be at Cort which is out of town. Was at Farm show 100,000 attend per day 100 acres with parking. Was dense fog when I arrived. could not mark location where I had parked. I left 45 min early to get to court. Could not find car for 30 min. Cort was 15 miles from Show. Got on Freeway almost no traffic. Passed a couple of cars thought I was doing 70 75 took a look at the speed and it said 100 MPH got to court with 5 min to spare

Only problem with the smooth-case is if it breaks, good luck finding parts!!

And that folks is why I have two.

Yes I understand that problem but I had one on hand and if I break this one, then I will get something different. As it only takes about 1.5 hours to get it out of the car.
I have had this car since 1973. tranny always been close to failing. I am just amazed it has take all the abuse I have given it over the years. It has lasted 20 years more than I thought.
More ? soon
Thanks

Re: Tranny option on 58 sprite what is wrong

HI
Now I am not sure what the problem is.
As I have taken the side cover off the one I thought had a tooth or 2 missing. All looks very good. NO metal bits in tranny. All gears have all their teeth. When I would put it in first gear there was a pattern to a schee noise and this noise got louder with more throttle. It would also do it in revers but not as loud. In all other gears, it was gone. The pattern seemed to match revolutions.
I drove the car like this for 3 or 4 months.
Then the front pulley broke and I thought I would fix both at the same time.
Could the only problem be the bad Pulley?

Re: Tranny option on 58 sprite what is wrong

They have always been known to be kinda noisy in first and reverse!

Re: Tranny option on 58 sprite what is wrong

Expanding on Mikes statement, first and reverse are straight cut gears, and will always scream.
Normal operation due to their design.
The ribcase box is the same.
That's a pretty typical front pulley failure. Do yourself a favor and get one for a 1275. It's a cast item with an integral damper.

Re: Tranny option on 58 sprite what is wrong

but this is a different noise it is not steady it goes schree quite and schree even at little throttle. It seems to keep time with revolutions.
I am use to the whine in first. It is a steady sound. This one like a pulse and only in first and a little in reverse.
Let me ask this question: If a tooth or 2 chipped off of first gear, how long before it is completely gone?
I have been looking for rub marks and have not found any.
Did find some small metal bits and some fine metal dust on the inside of bell housing. But I think this is from starter motor and ring.

Re: Tranny option on 58 sprite what is wrong

I will refit the shift lever today and get it in first gear and spin the shaft to see what happens.
also the sound is more like 2 bricks rubbing together.
I have been looking for rub marks and dust but cannot find any on other items.
At times the speed cable would start to chatter but the sound seems to come from the bottom of car

Re: Tranny option on 58 sprite what is wrong

The bearing in the front cover might be suspect with that noise diagnosis, especially if you found metal shavings in the bell housing!

Re: Tranny option on 58 sprite what is wrong

SIM, if you need a spare smooth case let me know. I have 2, maybe even 3 collecting dust in the shop. I don't use them in the racecars. You pay shipping and cost of crating/packing and they're yours.

Re: Tranny option on 58 sprite what is wrong

HI
I would be interested in one.
The problem with the one I was going to use had an extra spring that showed up when I was cleaning it out. It looks like the ones that are under the side cover. It had 2 but not sure where the third one came from.
How good is the best Tranny?
Thanks
Sim
