Tranny oil in 100-4

Got a quick question for my fellow Healey nuts - I am
going to change the trans and o/d oil on my BN1 and it
currently has something in it heavier than 30 weight which
I know is correct. Probably 80-90 weight based on the smell.
However, the overdrive currently works great and my question
is should I still go ahead and change it to the correct
30 weight or maybe leave well enough alone ????? I am leaning
to changing it out but with a 54 year old Healey, thought
this might merit some feedback.

There has been much discussion on this subject. Look for posts around May 2007.
I use Penrite 40 Gearbox Oil. Slightly heavier than 30 weight for the warm Queensland climate.
 
Check old discussions. The 80-90 weight may not be engine oil and therefore a different scale. Many of us use Redline MT-90 or a Valvoline product.
 
I used Redline in my E type moss box (about the same vintage engineering as the 100 4 gearbox) and it helped shifting and quieted things down a bit.
 
Many years ago i remember my dads tranny was very notchy and we changed oils 4 or 5 times. Each one was unacceptable, some played havoc with the OD. Put in the Redline MT 90 and it was as good as new. I drove the car for the first time in 15 years about two months ago and it still shifted beatifully.
 
yeah, the MT90 does the trick. Some engine oil multiweights I've used in the tranny are really bad because they are so slippery the synchros never bite, always grinding gears and shifting is a bear.
