Trafficator tests

I have pulled the trafficator out of my 64 BJ8 project car and was wondering how to check it to see if it is ok or should I just completely dissassemble it and clean it. The self cancelling feature does work. Thanks for your help.

John

I remember the first time I disassembled one of these things. Actually it went well because I took it slowly and made drawings as I went. However, in the Internet age we can do even better... take a look at TRACY'S WEBSITE. There's a page on there with all kinds of good close-up photos of this very subject. A few drawings might also be good idea, but this should give you a big head start.

I can also get you in touch with two very good folks who rebuild these things, if needed. Good luck.

I've rebuilt mine 3 times in the past year. I finally got everything working the third time. The photos on the site Reid gave you are very helpful, but I cannot stress enough to note the orientation of each itty bitty part. Everything in a trafficator is there for a reason. I would tell you to leave it alone if everything works. But if you've already got it apart, clean it out and relubricate. But inspect each piece for how it fits together from all aspects, and be very careful with the ends of the wire harness as they are old and they break easily. If you have any specific questions, I'm happy to help.

John,

You can check the wiring with the OHM function on a VOM -tester. Set to OHM's and touch the two test leads and you should get a reading on the gauge. Then put one lead on the brown/black wire, the other on the stator tube (ground) and push the horn button (yea .. it takes some contortions). The meter should show that you have completed the circuit. The three green wires are for the turn signals. With the turn signal in the middle position, no combination of touching the three green wires should complete the circuit. With the signal on left you should be able to get a reading with two of the wires and with it on right you should get a reading with two wires. On my wiring the neutral is green/white but yours is probably different.

Since it is relatively easy to pull the trafficator later if needed I wouldn't rebuild it unless it has a problem. If you need to replace the harness you can do that without tearing the whole assembly apart .. just remove/install one wire at a time (after following the first 6 photos on the above website).

Cheers,
John
