Trafficator - how to check if it's set correctly

If your trafficator does not click off after a short turn, there may be two reasons.

1. It needs to be rebuilt
2. User error.

I fall under user error.
It seems that when I changed my steering wheel and put the trafficator back in, I did not line up the canceling plate correctly on the bottom of the trafficator.

If you put the canceling plate on the top, under the exterior flip lever, the distance is greater for the canceling plate to get to the two pins on the bottom of the trafficator.....duh.

Once I move the canceling plate to the bottom, the steering wheel did not have to move as much for the canceling to occur.

I'm humbling sharing this information in case others wonder why their directionals don't click off after a short turn.

If you want to check your unit, here's the breakdown of what you need to do. The photos will be in the same order as the directions.

1. Makes sure you have enough wire available to be pulled up the steering column. You'll need just enough to pull the trafficator out enough to see the unit.

2. Unscrew the 3 set screws on the steering wheel hub.

3. Pull the trafficator straight out and look at the top of the trafficator. You should see the two springs.

4. Look at the bottom of the trafficator, you should see the canceling plate dead center.

5. If 3 and 4 are not correct, like mine was, move the canceling plate to the bottom.

6. Push the unit back into the hub and tighten the 3 set screws.

Test drive the turn signals and celebrate with a WOO HOO.

Cheers,
Roger

Re: Trafficator

Hi Roger,
WOO HOO! Does this mean you don't have to pursue the audible turn signal anymore?

Re: Trafficator

Hey Greg,

You sir hit the nail on the head.

That entire exercise of needing an audible signal reminder was because my directionals were not turning off in a timely fashion, or at all.

As far as pursing the audio reminder any more, I put a fork in that yesterday and shared what I came up with on that post. I'll leave finding a better solution than what I came up with to the smarter MacGyvers out here.

Hopefully I have enlightened others why their trafficator is not working as it should.

Humbly yours,
Mr. I create my own problems Roger...WOO HOO!

Re: Trafficator

Don't kick yerself too bad. I'd be lyin' if I said I never had a slice of humble pie put before me onna table. In the end, you did find a good solution on your own.

My only comment on all of this is that when you put the canceling tab at the bottom, the turn signals will cancel just as you start turning your wheel in a turn, which isn't all that great in crowded cities like Hong Kong or San Francisco where I drive.

I used to have it on the bottom as well, but switched it to the top so that I would have to turn it a bit before it would cancel.

Re: Trafficator

That and having the tab at the top helps keep dust out when parked....

Re: Trafficator

The trafficator should not cancel going in to a turn only when the wheel returns? Are you sure the little cancellation tangs are installed correctly.--Keoke-?

Hi Alan,

I don't have that situation. Mine will cancel on the return direction.

Maybe, as Keoke mentioned, the two tangs are facing the wrong direction?
Here's a photo showing the correct position of the tangs.

Where is the correct place for the canceling tab? Bottom? (2nd photo)

En what is a better screw for locking the trafficator in the hub Roger? An Allen or Bristol head will do it---Keoke-

Those are the screws that came with the steering wheel from Moss. I actually had to cut them down.

Keoke, wanna offer your thoughts on my previous question. Bottom or top?

--Yes they are like the originals. However my experience with those grub screws is : 1] the heads will break. That is 1/2 of the slot will break off.
2] the screw driver will slip out of the screw's slot and scratch the hub.
3] When the length of the screw is adjusted to set just below the top of its mounting hole the screwdriver sides chip out the top edges of the hole..

So I eliminated those potential problems by replacing the slotted grub screws with Bristol head type. I carry the wrench in the ca's ash tray.

Keoke, wanna offer your thoughts on my previous question. Bottom or top? Sure what you want me to say!----I always get it at the bottom.---

ausmhly, just wondering...is that the "neutral" position of your steering wheel with the spokes at the 12 oclock position?

Hello Anthony,

The correct position of the steering wheel (3 spoke) is for the spokes to be at 12 o'clock when driving straight, or "neutral".

Cheers,
Roger

Hello Anthony,
:savewave:---TH!---
The correct position of the steering wheel (3 spoke) is to set one of the spokes to the 12 o'clock position. when the driving position is straight ahead, or "neutral". En nen you can see the Tach and Speedo clearly at speed.

Cheers,
Roger
